The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards exists to support the campus community based on the principles outlined in the Duke Community Standard - honesty, trustworthiness, fairness, and respect for others. There are several ways students, staff, and faculty can become involved: Community Standard Advocates (students, staff, and faculty), and the Conduct Board (students, staff, and faculty). 

Community Standard Advocate (CSA) 

Are you passionate about fairness, integrity, and student development? Consider becoming a Community Standard Advocate (CSA)—a group of students, staff, and faculty dedicated to maintaining a respectful and accountable university community.  

As a CSA, you will:  
  • Provide guidance and support to students and student organizations involved in the disciplinary and non-disciplinary process—whether they are under investigation, or are preparing for their upcoming administrative conference, administrative hearing, or Amnesty meeting;  
  • Attend conduct board hearings as a non-speaking advisor to respondents; the selected CSA will not be able to serve as a panelist during the same conduct board hearing; 
  • Serve as an ambassador for fairness, honesty, and accountability both within and beyond the university

Conduct Board (CB)

As a member of the Conduct Board, you’ll also have the opportunity to:  
  • Adjudicate conduct cases involving alleged violations of university policy via a conduct board hearing via a three-person panel;  
  • Help determine whether students or student organizations have violated policy and recommend appropriate outcomes that reflect both the nature of and circumstances surrounding the violation, university values, prior disciplinary history, precedent of cases, and preponderance of evidence;   
  • Plan, lead, and support events that foster communication, cohesion, and ethical decision-making  
  • Collaborate on policy work and outreach to strengthen community values  
  • Serve as an ambassador for fairness, honesty, and accountability both within and beyond the university  
  • By joining the Conduct Board team, you will develop valuable leadership, decision-making, and guidance skills while making a meaningful impact on campus life; 

The Conduct Board contains one central mission: encouraging all members of the Duke community to uphold all policies associated with the Duke Community Standard:  

  • I will not lie, cheat, or steal in my academic endeavors.  
  • I will conduct myself honorably in all my endeavors.  
  • I will act if the Standard is compromised.
